What does this mean?

Today I went IRS website to check the status of my amended return for 2019. And the system shows the following notification:

"Your amended return was received on April 13, 2020. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please call 800-829-0582 , extension 623, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return."

I tried to call the number with the extension they provided, but no representative answered the phone because of the extremely high volume of calls.

Should I continue to call the number or just wait?

Just wait. Amended returns take a long time to process. And you are lucky it's even showing up at all.

In normal times it takes up to 16 weeks or more to process an Amended 1040X return. But these are not normal times.

Sorry the IRS has limited staff due to Covid-19. They just started opening the mail in June that's been stacking up. Back in March the IRS closed their processing centers and stopped processing mailed tax returns. An IRS spokesperson recently said that they have about 11 million pieces of unopened mail. So you have to keep waiting.

Just wait . the paper returns piled up for 4 months and the usual 3-4 month processing times for an amended return is now more like 4-8 months and all you can do is wait. It is good news that they do have the return in processing and not in a pile of unopened mail so be patient and check the IRS site once a week for a progress update.

I am on the same page. Submitted my 2017 amended refund early this year (March 2020) and website shows the following message as of today:

Your amended return was received on April 13, 2020. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please call 800-829-0582 , extension 623, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return.

While filing my 2019 tax, TT CPA mentioned that it might take them a long time to process , may be >6 months so I have not made any inquiry with them yet. Let me know if you receive any update. Thnx.

@lkj312951210 - I'm curious to know if this was ever resolved (if your return was finally processed). I filed an amendment for 2019 back in May, they received it in June, and I just saw the same note you said you got. I have tried calling but to no avail since they're facing "High call volume" and the call gets disconnected. Anyways, wondering what's going on with yours.

Amended returns that usually take 3 - 4 months to process are taking 6 - 8 months this year due to the 4 month covid shutdown earlier. All you can do is wait until they get to your return in the 11+ million envelopes that piled up during the shut down (with more coming everyday).

I got the same message too for my amended return. Honestly I’ve only ever seen it when someone was audited and freaking out. I’m about to check my transcript and I’ll let y’all know what I see. Usually an audit shows a 420 code on transcripts so praying it’s all good. Check your transcripts that’s all I can say, you can make account on irs site or Google irs check transcripts and it’ll guide you. It does show mine were receivedey June but just today appeared so hooting it’s just a delay

The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return could only be filed by mailing it in until late August 2020 when the IRS began to accept e-filed 2019 amended returns. Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now. The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer. Sorry.

IRS operational status and alternatives

Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File .

We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.

Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.

TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040X in an envelope and took it to a mailbox. TurboTax does not get updates on mailed (or e-filed) returns.

When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.
